Flood damage has displaced families, disrupted livelihoods and limited access to essential services
FIFA Foundation is working with humanitarian partners to provide emergency assistance to affected communities
Relief efforts are focusing on emergency shelter, healthcare and access to safe water
The FIFA Foundation is providing humanitarian support to communities affected by devastating flash floods in northern Nepal through its Humanitarian Fund. The contribution is supporting emergency relief and early recovery for families whose lives and livelihoods have been disrupted.
The flash floods struck on 26 August 2026, affecting an estimated 93,000 people and causing extensive damage across the districts of Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Dhading. Homes, schools and health facilities were damaged, while the destruction of roads and bridges left some communities isolated.
“Football is usually about bringing communities together in celebration. In times like these, however, the protection and preservation of those communities becomes paramount,” said Gianni Infantino, FIFA President. “The FIFA Foundation is honoured and privileged to make this contribution.”
The Foundation is supporting the Emergency Appeal response of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), working alongside the Nepal Red Cross Society. The response includes emergency shelter and household supplies, cash assistance, healthcare and psychosocial support, and access to safe water and sanitation.
“The FIFA Foundation stands alongside the people of Nepal as they recover from the impact of these devastating floods,” said Mauricio Macri, Executive Chairman of the FIFA Foundation. “Through our Humanitarian Fund and partners on the ground, we are helping deliver vital assistance to affected communities as they begin rebuilding their lives.”
Road access has recently been restored to some areas that were restricted, but some communities are still inaccessible. For these, Red Cross staff and volunteers are continuing to deliver relief supplies by helicopter. In accessible areas, cash assistance is helping families cover everyday expenses and temporary accommodation and arrangements are being made for both transitional and permanent housing. Primary and community-based health services are being provided, especially to those who have lost their homes.
“For some of the affected communities, we are still on an emergency footing – providing basics like food and hygiene kits. Recently a new, smaller flash flood in northern Gorkha District has added yet more families in a desperate state” said David Fisher, IFRC’s Head of Delegation for Nepal. “For many others, we are working on early and long-term recovery, supporting the healing of families for the shocking loss of loved ones, rebuilding decimated water and sanitation systems, and the bringing hope to communities to reverse the loss of land, livelihoods and security.”
Trained volunteers are providing psychological first aid, psychosocial support and ongoing case management to people coping with grief and trauma, alongside services to restore contact between separated family members.
The FIFA Foundation Humanitarian Fund is a dedicated mechanism for providing timely, lifesaving support following natural and human-made disasters worldwide. By working with established humanitarian organisations and local partners, the Fund enables the Foundation to respond to urgent needs and support vulnerable communities.
